I'm getting an error "Max message size exceeded"

What to do when you get an error saying that your email message is too large.

If you're submitting a deal but:

  • It's not going through

  • No one is receiving it

  • The submission says "Errored"

A likely cause is that the files are too large.

Please hover over the submission record and click "View Error".

If you see a message like this:

Message failed: 552-5.3.4 Your message exceeded Google's message size limits. To view our
552-5.3.4 message size guidelines, go to
552 5.3.4 https://support.google.com/mail/?p=MaxSizeError 6a1803df08f44-7077cd558f4sm62319706d6.43 - gsmtp

This error message means that the files that you're submitting combine for over 25 MB.

Google has a limit on the size of files that you can send through them, and that's whether you're sending through an app like MCA Pilot or whether you send it directly from Gmail itself - you'll always have that limit.

Or you might see an error like this:

Message failed: 550 Error reading data, max message size exceeded

Which means the email was rejected by the recipient’s mail server. Most email providers have similar attachment size limits (25 MB, 30 MB, etc.) so they won't accept any incoming email with files larger than that.

The way to get around it is to compress your files. Hopefully it compresses enough on this first run, but you may need to continually recompress it until it goes below the 25 MB. Here's some good websites you could use for compressing:
